You can see why lit crit types say the author's view is irrelevant - it is much more comforting to pretend it doesn't matter ;)

Oh yes. The author is dead and all that. I'll happily agree when we're talking about literature. Comics/TV shows etc are different, not least because the creators are interacting with the readership/viewership while the creative process is ongoing.

So if it is a series of books is the author allowed to be a little bit alive?

I suppose so, depending on how much they interact with the fans. George RR Martin (writer of Game of Thrones) does that a lot, so obviously it would apply to his work.
