Ripper Street & Being Human
Feb. 4th, 2013 05:17 pmStill no Ripper Street icons about? At this rate, I'll have to make my own, and since it's probably eighteen months since I even tried to make an icon, I don't think they're likely to be much good. ;)
Spoilers behind cut for both shows.
I still love and adore Ripper Street. Sergeant Drake is my favourite character. I think last week's ep (guest starring the very lovelyJorah Mormont Iain Glen), did a great job of fleshing out his character and making us understand why he is like he is. This week's ep was a good one for both Inspector Reid and Homer Jackson. The stuff with Reid, his wife, his missing daughter, and Miss Goran was particularly well done, I thought (you could see the UST between Reid and Miss Goran right from ep 2). I wonder, now that a second series has been announced, if the mystery surrounding Homer Jackson and Long Susan will be stretched out a little longer.
Anyway, this article about the 'science' of Ripper Street, is great fun, I think.
Re: Being Human, I enjoyed it (though there were a couple of times I had to look away), but am dubious about the inclusion of 'the Devil' in the show. See, I think that it was when season 2 got all religious that the show faltered badly. Season 4 was a shot in the arm. I'd hate to see it make the same mistake again. That said, this is (apparently), the last series, so maybe they just want to go out with a bang?

Date: 2013-02-04 05:32 pm (UTC)This is a link to the BBC America Ripper Street page. They seem to have lots of nice pics, especially in the 'gallery' section. Should add, the three main characters are the bloke in he bowler hat (Reid), the bloke with the dish-shaped face and the beard (Sgt Drake) and the suave American with the moustache (Homer Jackson).

Date: 2013-02-04 05:47 pm (UTC)I was wondering that too. They've done a very good job of keeping the mysteries bubbling along underneath the main story and I don't think they will want to lose that. I think Jackson may have a lot of secrets in his past!

Date: 2013-02-05 06:21 am (UTC)Haven't watched the first Being Human, either, but definitely planning to enjoy. I'm glad to hear you did, in spite of religious reservations.

Date: 2013-02-05 01:27 pm (UTC)I hadn't heard that. Good to know.
I thought this week's ep was particularly good, and it felt less as if they were stuffing their research down our throats and cared more about the actual characters as a result.
Really? Although I rewatched the last ep of S4 just before seeing the new one, and compared to Hal drinking maggoty blood and Nick Cutler forcing his way across the threshold, nothing was going to seem icky.
I think it will potentially be nice to have a new type of supernatural entity in the mix as an opponent. They have rather used up the possibilities of evil vamp villains. Plus I think Phil Davis is a very good actor and will bring a lot to it.
I loved Hal being driven insane by the mess. But I miss Annie already.

Re: Being Human, I didn't like the bit with the eyes.
Also, I agree that Phil Davis is very good, but the Devil is hardly just a new type of evil. It's ultimate evil. As I said, I suppose since it's the last series, they're going for broke.

Date: 2013-02-06 07:49 am (UTC)Oddly enough I don't know what you are referring to (I'm assuming it's not just the slight red glow in the devil's eyes) so either I wasn't paying proper attention or it is something I am less squicked by than you.
I bow to your Catholic education as to the difference.

Date: 2013-02-06 03:02 pm (UTC)Remind me, what was it specifically about the religious stuff in S2 that you didn't like?
Having just done a complete rewatch, I find I have mellowed towards S2 and S3 and could enjoy them far more. Partly because I am no longer invested in the character of Mitchell so don't mind what happens to it.

Date: 2013-02-05 07:57 pm (UTC)I'm rather ambivalent on the show. It's pretty grim and the lead keeps making me think he's Brendan Fraser, but I do find the doctor quite an interesting character to watch. I'll certainly see the rest of the series but I can't say I'm really enthused, even though I'd expect there to be more slash written.

Who is Brendan Fraser?

Date: 2013-02-05 08:18 pm (UTC)Fraser is an American actor, probably best known for The Mummy series:
