I guess in the time when they had the death penalty the whole idea of private police vengeance takes on a slightly different colour. It left a bad taste in my mouth though. The Ripper Street characters cross the moral line more often than I am entirely comfortable with. I am sure it is appropriate for that period, but it is still hard to like them in an unqualified way looking at it with our modern sensibilities.
Still, I agree it was a very good ep and it is great to find out more about the characters backgrounds.

See, I sort of like the fact that they're trying not to be anachronistic about that. Plus, I suspect private police vengeance still happens. They just pay lip service to it not happening.
