Game of Thrones Season 6 Ep 5
May. 23rd, 2016 10:03 pmJust watched this and...
Spoilers
... firstly, yay! no boring Boltons! Secondly, they're killing off minor characters at a fairly steady rate this season, aren't they? But at least Hodor (not to mention Bran's direwolf, and there are now only two left of the entire litter) had an heroic end, unlike poor Osha. Thirdly, anyone else think it makes no sense for Jon, Sansa et al to leave Castle Black and ride south right into Ramsey's clutches?
No, I thought not.
And anyone else want to punch Littlefinger in the face for trying to poison the Sansa/Jon relationship?
Yeah, I thought as much (also, go, Sansa in that scene. I just wish she'd let Brienne kill Littlefinger).
Other random thoughts:
The Dany/Jorah scene made me quite tearful. I suspect it's their last. If so, at least he can die knowing she cares about him.
What the hell is Tyrion up to, inviting a bunch of religious nutters into Meereen? Mind you, Cersei did the exact same thing with the High Sparrow and his bunch of killjoys last season. Is it some kind of Lannister family failing?
Learning how the White Walkers were created, and the final big fight scene were awesome, but we still didn't learn what happened to Benjen Stark.
Nice Richard E Grant cameo in the Arya scene. I hope this is where she tells the Faceless God to eff off.
Sorry. Not a very good review, but better than nothing.

Date: 2016-05-23 09:17 pm (UTC)Literally the stupidiest thing I've ever seen so far. WTF? I'm glad you pointed that out, because I can understand the thinking process behind this decision.
Hodor's death was so sad and it was the greatest circular narrative ever, I love it! But I'm even more sad that Summer died. Idk if that's normal XD Poor puppy, he was so loyal and too pure for this ugly world!

Date: 2016-05-24 02:19 pm (UTC)As for the decision to go south while I can see - as someone points out below - that it's the only thing that can be done strategically, I also know that it inevitably means one of the Sansa/Jon party falling into Ramsey's clutches and being horribly put to death in front of everyone later in the season. That's just how GoT rolls. ;)

And OMG can I be anymore tired of Bran?

Date: 2016-05-23 09:45 pm (UTC)But yay white walkers! Go team! Loved the Aliens shoutout with the elf whatever woman and her grenade. So now we're down to... one direwolf, right? Unless Nymeria turns up again?
I'm really liking Sansa this season. Yes, giving up an army is not a good idea, but nothing good EVER came from allying oneself with Littlefinger, and Sansa knows that better than anyone.
Also, Joffrey got slapped! Twice!

Date: 2016-05-24 02:29 pm (UTC)I'll never understand why these "magical creatures" people can never explain things clearly as if: DUDE, IF YOU FUCK UP WITH THESE TRIPS YOU KILL PEOPLE. Why always so vague????
Yes, I also don't think it was something heroic. He never had a choice. He was just a victim, poor boy.

But yay white walkers! Go team!
Hee!

Yes, that's right. If they want to make Ramsey's death (please this season, please) more of a production than just the tide of battle sweeps over him, squashes him and no one notices, my ideal scenario would be, Ramsey gets defeated in battle, runs off into the woods and is eaten by Nymeria. Seems apt.

Very true. I just wish she had told Jon that instead of lying to him. I hate Littlefinger more than ever for sowing that seed of doubt in her. Also, I still don't get his motivation. It's like he just wants to cause chaos - a bit like Ethan Rayne but a lot less endearing.
Also, Joffrey got slapped! Twice!
Yes. Made me all nostalgic, that did.

Date: 2016-05-23 10:29 pm (UTC)The Dany/Jorah scene was lovely
And Littlefinger needs to be repreatedly smashed in the face.
And Tormunds continued 'flirting' with Brienne was the ray of sunshine in a scary, tragic episode.
Hodor.

Maybe he and Ramsey can kill each other? I'd be fine with that.
Hodor.
Waah!

Date: 2016-05-24 01:04 am (UTC)Though I have to say I was underwhelmed by the White Walker reveal. It just left too many questions for me - like who was the guy they sacrificed? Why would you make a monster that you couldn't control? What the hell did you shove inside of him anyway? How did you know that would work? Why do the White Walkers make Zombies and not more White Walkers? And if you could create grenade fire things out of thin air, why did you need White Walkers to fight humans? What were the humans doing? How many where there??!?!?!
So, yeah, either I need a lot of flashback episodes or I'm going to be perpetually annoyed by this. Does anyone know if Martin got this far in the books at all? I just don't feel like it adds up.

Date: 2016-05-24 04:51 pm (UTC)I have no idea whether he's ever stated how the White Walkers came into existence, but I know he's had all this mythology with the Children of the Forest (the fairy-like people who created the White Walkers in the show) fighting the First Men and the Andals, etc, etc.
I guess it doesn't really matter who the guy who got a flint through his heart is. Random Victim. It's no wonder he's a bit peeved, though.
Re: why the White Walkers create zombies, not more White Walkers, that isn't strictly true. We saw last season that they were changing Craster's infants sons that he was leaving in the forest for them into White Walkers. Maybe they can only do it with babies?
If most of the current White Walkers are actually Craster's sons by incest, it's no wonder they're so cranky. ;)

Date: 2016-05-24 05:00 pm (UTC)Anyway, like you I'm enjoying this season very much. It's like having to make stuff up rather than sticking to the books has liberated the show and given it more focus.
Now if only we can get shot of Ramsey...

Date: 2016-05-31 11:12 am (UTC)It does look like Dany's plot is finally on the move. I am quite interested in what she'll think when she gets back to Meereen and discovers what alliances Tyrion has made in her absence.
