Lucifer season 3 episode 6
Nov. 7th, 2017 10:15 amOkay, this was totally preposterous. On the other hand, it was an absolute delight from start to finish.
Spoilers behind cut.
Preposterous stuff includes...well, most things, actually. From Ella deciding to go with Lucifer in the search for Candy just because, then turning out to be such a whiz at all things Vegas (never in an annoying way, though, IMO. You just go with it), to Chloe being so put out with Lucifer disappearing on her birthday (this is, if you try to put the episode in current season 3 emotional context, where it really doesn't fit, though it's true, as Dr Linda says, that birthdays can make you sentimental), then breaking into his penthouse, then getting drunk, then trying to break into his safe, etc, etc. Plus the whole Vegas razzamatazz, with Ella and Lucifer in costume, etc, et-more-cetera.
All utterly preposterous, but such great fun, and with such fabulous dialogue (well, some of it), that I just don't care at all. I loved it from start to finish.
Not sure what the Deckerstar 'shippers will have made of it. They've had pretty thin pickings this season so far, and even this episode had a bittersweet quality where the 'ship is concerned. All it really did was to emphasise in a softer way than previous episodes that Chloe is really trying to put Lucifer behind her (get thee behind me, Satan?) and friendzone him completely. Also that Lucifer really does believe that ending it between them in any way he can is best for her.
Hopefully, at some point, Lucifer making decisions on Chloe's behalf-no matter how well-intentioned - will come back to bite him. It should do. We're long past the days of Angel leaving Buffy for her own good, and so on. Or we should be. And hopefully it'll happen soon enough to save the show from the inevitable fan backlash if the situation continues as is. Anyway...
Next week's episode, from what co-showrunner Ildy Moldrovich said on Twitter, is the third of the four season 2-made standalones. After that, we get back to the ongoing season 3 story. That means another Marcus Pierce-less episode next week. Yay!
On the other hand, since Welling is signed for 15 episodes and there've already been three without him, we're running out of Pierce-less episodes fast. Boo!
Trivial stuff (or maybe not so trivial):
I hope Lucifer rather enjoying being frisked by the security guard in the casino doesn't have to count as this season's bisexual reference.
Tom Ellis was miming during the song and dance routine, but I think that was him singing.
ETA: I checked on Twitter. Yes, it was Ellis singing.

Date: 2017-11-07 02:07 pm (UTC)They tried to edit in such a way that it would work this season, but it doesn't.
The sound editing was off -- that's the syncing during the dance number. It was off slightly in other places as well during the Vegas portion.
The writers appear to moving away from Deckerstar this season. Feel sorry for the shippers. Because I don't see them moving back towards it any time soon. I honestly think they may be moving towards a Charlotte/Lucifer and Pierce/Chloe set-up. I hope not, but it feels like that may be the general direction. Although I'm not sure Lucifer could ever go there with Charlotte, after his Mum inhabited her body for a year.

Yes, a pity. Lindsey Gort who plays Candy was also actually singing, I've learned. I think she sang Fever pretty well.

Date: 2017-11-07 04:58 pm (UTC)I also thought it was a more entertaining story than usual (though I pegged the killer from his first moments on screen). A lot of it has to do with making Chloe something other than "the uptight character." Plus I really liked Lucifer's relationship with Candy and discovering how that whole story came about. And the bullet gift was unexpected and the line pretty clever.

Date: 2017-11-07 05:23 pm (UTC)Yes, that was all extra-specially preposterous. ;)
I should have mentioned the book. Of course Lucifer would have a signed copy of Hamlet. ;)
I agree the Lucifer/Candy relationship is fun. I hope Candy will be back at some point. I'd like the show to develop a small cast of supporting characters. The little stalker girl from season 2 is a character I'd like to see again. Also, the scary female property mogul.

Date: 2018-02-11 09:02 am (UTC)I don't usually like Ella, because she's so over the top, but she was great in this episode. Maybe this ep's writer gets her, who knows?
I also thought it was obviously Tom Ellis's voice for the song. (That man is amazing.)
I, as a Deckerstar shipper, thought the shippy parts of the episode were great.
I haven't really drawn the parallel to old shows, of Lucifer making a decision for Chloe for her own good. I see the situation a bit differently: he is acting out of (totally in-character) self-interest. He does not want his dad to manipulate him. I don't think he's thinking of Chloe much in that respect, and he's rightfully disregarding his own feelings because this matter of principle is more important to him. I can totally see why he's doing it, and even though I ship them, I am fine with it.
I see how lots of people would see the parallel, though, and can't help thinking they're right in finding it offensive and outdated. Hmm... dilemma. *g*

Date: 2018-02-11 11:51 am (UTC)Well, I haven't seen anyone complaining about it yet, but if they are it would be on Tumblr, which is not a site I like or use very much so hopefully for me I won't see it. ;)

This attitude is the most like Comics!Lucifer that Show!Lucifer has ever been, except that it makes Show!Lucifer sad, whereas Comics!Lucifer is too single-mindedly self-involved to experience more than passing regret, IMO.
