Because the end of my [livejournal.com profile] noel_of_spike story still wants to kill me, here's another one for you, though this time we've come back round into fandom territory.

We all know what Angel looked like in the 70s (a lot of us wish we didn't, and I bet the day he set eyes on the mullet wig was one of the ones when DB did his famous set your eyes on the finish line and just go for it thing), and of course we all know that Spike was a punk (what else could he have been?), but pre-1975/6, what would he have done to keep his rebel credentials intact? Was he into glam rock, prog rock or even disco?

I think he would have adored Ziggy Stardust personally, but maybe that's just because I do? Thoughts, anyone?

Also, Dru as a punk with her hair like Siouxsie's? Yes? No?

Oh! In an old W.I.P. I had a whole segment of Spike in the early 1970s emulating the "Lizard King" Jim Morrison of The Doors, complete with leather pants of evil. :) All the psuedo-important 'poetry', the uber-cool posturing seemed Spi-william-esque. Morrison loved the dark, rebellious, and vaguely poetic (think "The End", "You're Lost Little Girl" "Someday Soon" , etc. I also had Spike/Dru having sex on Morrison's grave in Pere Lachaise in Paris. I figure Acid Rock couldn't have been too much of a stretch after Spike went to Woodstock. :)

I can totally see Spike going from Bowie to garage rock to punk.
Dru was into glam rock, no doubt. I'm pretty sure she has bitten Marc Bolan.

Spike was SO not into Disco! *shudders at mere thought*

See, I see him going from 60s garage to acid rock to punk without even breaking stride. Sometimes I'm listening to these old 60s indy-hits and I'm stunned with how ahead of their time they were.

It, er, doesn't hurt that I'm into acid rock, so of course I assume Spike liked what I like. Not an uncommon assumption, is it? :D

Oh yes! This! Also, he was captivated by hot jazz and rhythm-and-blues, I think. I have a whole vision in my head of him driving around on a warm summer's night listening to Bo Diddley on the car radio...

I also think that he would have been kinda interested in Bowie, but really into the Velvet Underground and the Stooges. It's probably my Velvet Goldmine love. Or my youthful Creem magazine reading. Boy howdy!

Definately into Ziggy Stardust.

When I wrote Anticipation with dawnofme when we had Spike and Dru in '77 I pictured Dru with her hair all backcombed out. I originally put her in a leopard spot miniskirt, but dawn didn't think people would relate to Dru being in a short skirt so I went with a long skirt slashed to the hip! :D

Please God, not Spike a disco diva! LOL! If he liked the Ramones and Sex Pistols I really don't see that he could have ever liked disco.

I've always liked ShipperX's fanon that Spike was a Doors fan.

I think Spike would been more into Lou Reed and Iggy than Bowie (though not a Bowie hater, of course). While I am firmly convinced of his bisexuality, I think he's more drawn to the leather and implied danger version than the in-your-faceness of glitter. All that "ponce" talk speaks to me of the need to compensate, and going full-on metallic spandex would be that bridge too far, I think. I can see him bowing to Drusilla's desire to dress him up though. Mmmmmmm: Spike in leather pants and a feather boa. Yummy. The Doors thing makes perfect sense to me, as well. The baritone, the dark poetry, it's a natural fit. I guess that's why the Velvets seem right, as well.

Of course, you know my thoughts on Dru and Hendrix, and I imagine she'd be be excited about anything Eno did, as well. Hmmmm, maybe Roxy Music was their happy medium? I am really getting carried away with this. Moar plz.

hee hee oh yes, Dru would SO dress him up!

*happy sigh* I'd so see him with some glittery electric-blue eyeliner. We know he didn't so much mind a touch here and there. ;)

Spike's transformation is...odd. From wearing an SS coat because he likes it to punking it up in 1977, I don't know how this fits in at all:

Image

What that pic does tell you is that Dru will dress modern when she's not deathly ill with Spike picking out her clothes for her. I still can't picture her with Siouxsie hair, though. :-/ Visually, I see her more in halter neck cat suits (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/8-RETRO-HALTER-NECK-WIDE-LEG-BLACK-JUMPSUIT-CATSUIT-NEW_W0QQitemZ380178431707QQcmdZViewItemQQptZWomen_s_Clothing?hash=item5884667edb) and Maxi cocktail dresses. (http://ucanhealth.com/local/image_product1/slimagesmacyscomisimageMCYproducts4optimized506124fpxtifwid300&opsharpen1.jpg) (My mental image considered including Farrah hair (http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_iDeHdh7shuc/SkjzdUG3xQI/AAAAAAAAAmg/KesnAYN7Bmo/s400/Farrah_Fawcett2.jpg) for a second, but then I realized, "No. Dru had Vidal Sassoon hair. (http://farm1.static.flickr.com/96/275597108_5f8eed0934.jpg) Darla had Farrah hair.")

I'm sorry; I really have no idea about Spike, though.

I think Dru is more of a Cure-head.

If you wanted serious blackmail material Spike rocking out to Slade, all glitter and 'Mama! We're all crazy now!' would be perfect!

100% with you on Spike loving Ziggy Stardust - I think the whole Bowie vibe would have inspired him, the rebelliousness, the chameleon changes of character. I think he'd have adored the Thin White Duke / Berlin phase.

I see Dru more as new romantic than a Siouxsie type though... It would need to be dark and mysterious for her, whatever else. Maybe she'd be inspired by Kate Bush?

He Bowie totally fascinated me during my early twenties, but alas I missed his most glorious period. As for Spike I'd pegged him more for an Iggy fan though Bowie could interest him. Yet I do believe there're common grounds in my interst for Bowie and Spike: their chameleon aspect, the question of identity (there's something very baroque in their approach to life). For Dru I really don't know; earlier perhaps she could have been attracted by Janis Joplin's voice, its raw aspect, the pain it conveyed.

From: [identity profile] wenchsenior.livejournal.com
Dru would've been TOTALLY into Bowie (esp. early 70s); she would've taken his music very seriously (themes of aliens, apocalypse, insanity, isolation), gotten very emotionally involved, and worried about his mental state...getting hysterical while listening to some of the grimmer stuff off "Man Who Sold the World" or "Diamond Dogs," for example. And of course Dru'd LOVE the outfits.

Spike I definitely see as having more complicated reactions. I, too, think he's an Iggy man. He would've sneered at Bowie pre-Ziggy (alienated folk/rock? So not Spike's thing). During the early 70s he would've admired Bowie's fearlessness and rebelliousness and he would've liked the harder-edged glam music. But Spike's all about believing in re-inventing yourself, not play-acting at re-inventing yourself, so "Young Americans" would've disgusted him and he would've aggressively dismissed Bowie for a long time after that. He'd rant to anyone who'd listen that Bowie "ruined" Iggy. Unfortunately for Spike, deep down he would've LOVED Bowie's periodic outbursts of over-the-top romanticism... half the "Station to Station" album, "Heroes," "Because You're Young," a lot of "Let's Dance," "Absolute Beginners," and "Black Tie White Noise," etc. He'd rather DIE than admit this, of course.

By the mid-90s' "Outside" and "Earthling," and the apparently ball-busting, rip-roaring shows DB was putting on, Spike wouldn't be taking it so personally any more; instead, he'd be pissed at ignorant Americans and American media who seemed to define Bowie solely by Ziggy and "Let's Dance."

Insomnia, what is it good for? Heh.
