Nice to see Lucifer back, even if it is only for two weeks.

This episode was very much a first part of something.

Spoilers behind cut.

It also, IMO, increased exponentially the possibility that Lt Pierce is the real villain of the season. I didn't say anything before when people were speculating Pierce himself would turn out to be the Sinnerman because I knew who had been cast in the role, but now the Sinnerman has revealed himself (allegedly) I'm beginning to think they're right.

This is because the Sinnerman's actions in this episode make no sense, especially in light of the build-up that the fake kidnapper from episode one - not to mention Pierce himself- gave him in earlier episodes. He was made out to be this terrifying criminal mastermind, and though it's perfectly possible for such a person to look like a retired history teacher (that's how he came across to me), it doesn't seem likely that they'd do all their own dirty work. Surely they'd have minions to do the actual killings. So, is the Sinnerman working for someone else?

Probably.

Either that, or, despite the self-mutilation (ick!) he's actually rather stupid. Okay, so Lucifer walked into his trap, but if he really was such a mastermind he would have made sure of Maze too. He also wouldn't have walked right into the subsequent trap set for him by Chloe and Charlotte.

Maybe he wanted to be caught?

Pierce actually being the villain would also make sense of Pierce telling Lucifer in episode 2 to keep Chloe out of the whole Sinnerman thing because she has a kid, only to come striding in in this episode to back up Lucifer's insistence that the Sinnerman is not an urban myth but real, thus dragging Chloe into the case. What's changed since episode 2? Well, for one thing, Pierce has found out that Chloe's is 'special.'

So either he's the villain and he needs her for something, or he's exactly what he seems and he's falling in love with her.

With this show, it could be either, or both. I just wish the whole thing didn't depend on Tom Welling. I just don't like him. I don't think he can act, and I don't find him attractive. This means that every time Chloe acts all coy/confused around him, or looks at him in a 'damn, that man is fine!' kind of way, I cringe. I also can't decide whether Welling is fat or not. He looks fat to me, but it could be pure muscle and he's just built, as we say in Britland, like a brick s**thouse. Either way, he has no neck, and the only person I'll excuse that in is Channing Tatum.

Don't get me wrong. I don't require men I find attractive to be perfectly toned. I just like them to have a bit of charisma - like the guy who played the con man in Mr & Mrs Mazikeen Smith. Welling just doesn't have any.

Oh well, as I've said before, as long as Welling being in the show helps it not get cancelled, I'll just have to grit my teeth and hope he doesn't stick around more than one season.

Other stuff: well, firstly it's great that Maze is really and truly back. I'm pretty sure this episode was filmed only about six weeks after Lesley-Ann Brandt had her baby. She looks absolutely amazing. It works for me that Maze is jealous about Linda having another 'friend'- much more interesting than her being jealous of Amenadiel having a new love interest. Sad, though, that the only way she could get Lucifer to listen to her was to lock him up again. I'd hoped he might do better this season. And what do we call the new 'ship? Amenda? Lindiel?

Tricia Helfer is still knocking it out of the park as Charlotte, but I have to say, I miss Mum. She was a way better character.

Been trying to remember if there are any blinded characters in the Lucifer comics, and the only one I can think of is Lucifer's fellow fallen angel, Meleos, who Lucifer blinds to stop him creating any more monsters like the Basanos. So, no real parallels.

Speaking of the comics, I read the last volume of the new Lucifer series from Vertigo the other day. Unfortunately, it was rather a disappointment. The original writer was gone, and the new writer just seemed to want to tie things up in an uncharacteristically neat bow. There were a few good moments, but I felt a bit let down, have to say.

I think Welling is built like a brick shithouse; he's just not on the no-carb diet one needs to achieve the ultra-cut look. But it doesn't matter, because he acts like a brick shithouse too. I honestly can't decide if we're supposed to think that Ella is nuts for burbling on about the chemistry he and Chloe have, and be suspicious when Chloe suddenly starts drooling over him this episode, or if there really was supposed to be chemistry all along and the actors just weren't up to it.

I've been thinking along the exact same lines. It's appears that they are trying really hard -- but it's just not there. If anything it's the exact opposite.

Glad I'm not alone on this.

Nodding along. Agree completely that Pierce is probably the one pulling the strings and agree completely on why. Pierce being Sinnerman and they guy caught, being a dupe or his minion makes more sense. Otherwise the episode and the build-up makes no sense.

Thank you. Completely agree with all of the above.

I'm anti-shipping him and Chloe, because it repels me. Every time he looks at Chloe that way, I cringe as well. The man is just not attractive to me.

And I've been wondering if he's fat as well, and can't quite decide. (Of course, I tend to think most Football players and boxers are fat, and they are just bulked up with muscle. Actually Alec Baldwin stated that bulking up tends to lead to fat and/or make you look fat, so did Marsters, who said it was better to build lean muscle. So there may be something to that?) Anyhow, I've been referring to him as a no-neck monster (a line from a Tennesee Williams play).

Glad to see I'm not alone in my dislike of Welling. They couldn't have cast someone more interesting? Was no one else available?

Don't get me wrong. I don't require men I find attractive to be perfectly toned. I just like them to have a bit of charisma - like the guy who played the con man in Mr & Mrs Mazikeen Smith. Welling just doesn't have any.

So agree. Toby on This is Us is huge, but I love him to death. They have to have charisma, something...Welling is just...welll...there's nothing there. It's a dead zone.

It works for me that Maze is jealous about Linda having another 'friend'- much more interesting than her being jealous of Amenadiel having a new love interest.

Agreed.

I honestly think she had the hots for Linda. (I admit, I've been shipping those two.)

Although I enjoyed the discussion through the door. It makes sense she still has to lock him up to get him to listen -- he's insanely self-absorbed. Getting better, but it wouldn't make sense for him to change too quickly in that respect.

(I miss his wings. I want the wings back. Do they just not have the budget for it?)

Tricia Helfer is still knocking it out of the park as Charlotte, but I have to say, I miss Mum. She was a way better character.

Agreed. She has chemistry with everyone. Sort of the female version of Tom Ellis. And yup, I miss Mum as well. Much better character, more layers. I preferred last seasons focus better to this seasons. But I admittedly like the family dynamics/supernatural angle better than the police procedural angle.

There was also a 'significant look' between Pierce and Sinnerman after Sinnerman was arrested, which must imply something. Not that I noticed when I watched. I just saw it get mentioned on Twitter. Welling probably looked exactly the same as he always looks so I missed it.

He did. But Welling gives that significant look to well everyone ....he gave it to Lucifer. The man was trained as a model not an actor. And you can tell.

It's going to be really icky when they kiss, which is bound to happen at some point.

Been dreading it. Oh, well, can always fast-forward.

Smallville does seem to have been inexplicably popular. Maybe the writers are all fans? I know they're BtVS fans. Though BtVS is a trillion times better than Smallville

Having actually watched most of the serious? Yep agree. Will state, from what I've seen? It had nothing to do with Welling who mainly walked through the role. Sure I've got folks on my reading list who loved him in it, but most were into Lex and the subtextual slash between Lex/Clark. Honestly, they couldn't have gotten the guy who played Lex? Then again, that may have been too obvious.

I think they feel they played around with the family angle a lot last season so they should take a different direction. A pity. I really want to see more of Lucifer's siblings

I was hoping for more of Lucifer's siblings as well. I'm hoping they don't stick with the police procedural angle...too long.

It's fun to read your review of this, since I've already seen ep 10 and know where they went. You guessed pretty much everything correctly. As usual. :D

I hate Tom Welling. Your description of his build is spot on, and that's also what I don't like about him - combined with the fact that he just stands around and says his lines without any inflection at all.

Ella constantly pointing out his hotness and the chemistry between him and Chloe is chafing, and it feels like she's grinding down Chloe until she finally believes the crap Ella is spouting. Argh. I hate all of it.

I do like that Ella can sense where Charlotte was, though. She mentioned something about "quieting the voices" in the Vegas episode, and I'm sure she has some kind of sensitivity to the supernatural. I like that because she doesn't herself seem to believe in it - it seems to be subconscious, and that's interesting. I would have guessed it to be more emotional and vague than "voices", but hey. I am up for whatever they decide to do with Ella in that respect.

I like Linda and Amenadiel, too, mostly because they're two of my fave characters on the show. I thought it was a bit obvious (and unexpected) how they were flirty with each other on the beach. It could have done with a little more subtleness, especially for Amenadiel. I love the actor, and I like to see him smile, but it felt too fast somehow.
